This review is from: The African and Middle Eastern Cookbook (Hardcover)

This book explores the (unfortunately little known) cuisine of Africa and the Middle East, giving details on cooking styles, beautiful pictures and over a hundred recipes that you can prepare yourself. The authors start by introducing the history, culture and background of both Africa and the Middle East (including North Africa’s strong connections to the rest of the Arab world). We also get a list of commonly used herbs, spices, breads, fruits, ingredients, condiments and drinks used in both areas. You know, like dates, coffee and challah bread.

Over the over 150 recipes, they are fairly evenly distributed between African and Middle Eastern countries. Split down into categories like appetizers, soups, salads, fish and vegetarian dishes, we are presented with a number of dishes from countries such as Egypt, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Cameroon, Morocco, South Africa, Mauritius, Nigeria, Ethiopia and elsewhere. Recipes for a number of familiar favorites are included, such as couscous, falafel, fried plantains, groundnut soup, curries, joloff rice, mint tea and tabouleh. But there is so much more as well. If you love the taste of Middle Eastern food, you won’t be disappointed by this book. Furthermore, given that the majority of the regions covered are Muslim, many of the recipes in here are halal. Do yourself a favor and check out this book. You can still find it pretty cheap at Borders and other stores if you look around.
